Milwaukee Bus Ride

Bob and I love to hop on a bus and take the cheap tour of whatever town we are in. Milwaukee is a bus city. In a few minutes standing on a downtown corner, I counted five buses. We rode the bus to and from the State Fair. On every corner the bus stopped and people got on, mostly, not off.

There must have been a huge white flight movement in Milwaukee. We were joined by African Americans, Hispanics, Asians, Eastern European on the bus and met up with all the white people at the fair. An Arab Festival (biggest in the U.S.A.)was taking place in an historic neighborhood - we didn't see any middle-eastern people on the bus.
Interesting point, there's a pub or tavern on every corner - filled with people - white people.

We rode a full bus back downtown in the early afternoon. Halfway through the ride, the bus driver announced, "you all have to get off and get on that other bus." No one said anything and we all got off and lined up and boarded the other bus. They all knew what was up.
Bob and I didn't, but followed without any questions.

Bob and I have always had good experiences on the bus. For example, a man got up and made room for Bob to have a seat on the 2nd bus and people are always willing to give us information on what bus to ride. This morning the hotel had given us the wrong information, but I didn't find out until I asked a man at the bus stop - he directed us to the right corner and bus number. Another man said, 'just follow me and you'll be there.' We were. Over and over again, when we ride a city bus, we meet interesting, helpful, and polite people that make our visits memorable.

We traveled through poor neighborhoods, miles and miles of once beautiful cared for homes - with good bones - of the city that now need some tender loving care. Hopefully, Milwaukee will be rediscovered.

Tomorrow Bob is looking forward to riding the shuttle from Moe's Pub to Miller Park to see a Brewer's game! They take us for free and bring us back. The pub is right around the corner from the hotel. (On our bus ride, I saw several other shuttles advertising rides to the ballgame. It is the thing - drink before, during and after. . . ) We will probably just eat peanuts and crackerjacks.
